Coaching is a partnership where the coach, will walk with you on a journey to self-awareness, helping you to find your own way through your problems and roadblocks and in doing so, find a way to live the life you are meant to have.
That might sound a bit 'woohoo' but it isn't really, in fact, the coaching process is systematic, based on science, supported on the foundation of practical studies, and if followed correctly, always solutions focussed.
The coaching process will be different for every person, it can be as short as a single session or can take many months to work through. It is designed to help you, find your own answers to whatever challenges you face.
The benefit a coach will bring you is their undivided attention and the skills to help you find different perspectives on whatever it is that is getting in your way.
Your coach will guide you along the awareness journey using coaching strategies that will vary depending on the challenge at hand.
As you walk the journey, you will become aware of different perspectives, new realities, and alternative ideas, all of which have always been available to you, but were invisible and unable to find alone. This is the true value of coaching.
A good coach will never give you advice, will never judge, and will never lead you in a direction based on his or her thoughts, experiences, or knowledge.
A good coach will always listen, will always work from a neutral and non-judgmental position, and will always be fully focused on ensuring that you work towards a goal that is tangible, attainable, and most of all, always in your best interests.
At the end of each session, you will not only have better awareness around the challenge you have brought to the coaching session, but you will also have a tangible action, sometimes more than one, that you will be able to work on in the coming days/weeks.
This way, your coach will help you take on the 'eat the elephant' one bite at a time challenge, helping you to define tangible action steps that align fully with your long-term goals. It is possible your goals may be met in a single session, however sometimes, unpacking the challenges we face can take much longer, and for these engagements, we look at our work together as a project, complete with timelines and action plans if you so wish.
Before you commit to any coaching package, it is important that you understand what coaching is, how it works, and whether it is right for you.
During the free 'Discovery' session, we will introduce the concept of coaching, explain our methods, and why we are passionate believers in the value of coaching.
We will talk about why you are interested in coaching, the things you would like help with unpacking in your life, and, if you wish to continue on the coaching journey with us, we will discuss the right coaching package for you.
At the end of the 'Discovery' session, you will understand how coaching works, and whether it will bring benefit for you. You will also leave the session with a full understanding of the timeline and pricing behind the coaching engagement.
Session intro & contract: 5-10 mins
We will have a quick chat about the things you want help with; we will check to make sure we are focussing on the right goal, we will make sure the goal satisfies your needs, we will measure where you are in respect to the goal and agree what would be a good result from the session. In doing this, we will agree on an informal contract for the session.
After establishing the contract, containing the goals and the deliverables for the session, we will move on to the main coaching segment.
Main coaching segment
During this segment, the coach will help you unpack the goal, and identify areas in and around the goal that may be worth shining a light on. These areas could range from the vision behind the goal, the reason for having the goal in the first place all the way through to whether you have the skills or knowledge, or even the environment necessary for the goal to succeed. The fundamental point of coaching is to help you build awareness around your challenges, whatever they may be, and with this awareness, unlock the answers to the questions you have been struggling to answer.
Depending on the challenge, and the awareness you are getting from the session, your coach may change strategy, backtrack and on some rare occasions, even revisit the initial goal of the session and create a new informal contract for the session.
This segment could take up to 45 minutes and will always involve lots of discussion, questions, visualizations and check-ins to make sure we stay on track. If the session goes to plan, you will also have one or a few 'Aha' moments, which is always a wonderful experience for both you and the coach.
Recap and action setting
If all goes well, at the end of the main segment, you will have increased awareness and hopefully, also some first/next steps you can take to get started on 'eating the elephant.
Your coach will then recap the session, bringing your attention once more to the areas that stuck out.
The coach will then document some action steps, and through the recap, ensure you are committed to following up on the action.
Value and close down
Lastly, the coach will check in once more with the original goal and ask once again for a measure of whether the goal has been achieved before closing down the session.
Accountability Buddy Service
At the session close down, your coach will offer the service of acting as an accountability buddy for the action(s) you defined. In this case, the coach will check in with you to see how the action plan is proceeding before the next coaching session. This can help with a commitment to take the first or next step.
Notes and Whiteboard content
After every session, if you wish, your coach will consolidate whatever notes and whiteboards that were taken and send them to you for your own records and reference.
Between sessions
If needed, you will have the opportunity to contact your coach before the next planned session. This could be needed to clarify something from the notes or to discuss something related to the planned action(s) that cannot wait until the next session.
It might not all be blue sky and plain sailing...
It would be disingenuous not to mention that not all coaching sessions are full of 'Eureka' or 'Aha' moments and that some challenges and goals may take multiple sessions and lots of back and forth to unpack.
Every person is different, as is every challenge and every goal that is set.
It can never be guaranteed that your goal will be attained in a defined time, as it is the very nature of coaching that unpacking one challenge may shine a light on others that you may also want to unpack.
Whether it is a short-term challenge, such as opening awareness around a decision that needs to be made or revitalizing an unbalanced aspect of your life, or a longer-term project such as unmasking the reality of limiting beliefs or a project that helps you move towards your dream career you are in good hands, and you can expect results.
